POEMS

Baptist Luncheon

At fifteen
silence drawn like drapes
around the table

when the father
of the girl I’d befriended at school

to whom I clung in loneliness
in crowded halls and whose name
I now forget

turned to me:

Tell us, dear,
how your Christian walk is going.
